Or….Why I Love Fitnessblender While on the Road
Its hard to stay fit while you travel. I’m not talking about the vacations where you walk miles a day hiking and/or sightseeing. I’m talking about the wonderfully lazy vacations that center around food. I think we’ve all been there….You exercise regularly and eat healthy leading up to a vacation. The vacation comes and you return home from all the fun and food to pants that no longer fit.
This has happened to me on more than one occasion. The most memorable was about 10 years ago. I came down with strep throat while at my in-laws for Christmas. I was sick enough to lay on the couch in my pajamas all week. But I was not sick enough to resist my mother-in-laws’ amazing pecan pie. I think I ate at least one piece a day all week long. When I went back to work the Monday after Christmas, I realized that I could barely get my dress pants buttoned.
Over the years I’ve gotten better at sticking to some regular exercise while traveling thanks to a free website called fitnessblender.com. As long as I have an internet connection, I have no excuse not to exercise. Here are my favorite ways that you can stay fit while you travel. If you are going to try these workouts, be sure to first read all the fun information and cautions about them on fitnessblender’s site. I would hate for anyone to get hurt.
If you find yourself in a hotel room, perhaps you got lucky and the kids are napping, and you want to get a quiet workout in, then I recommend this 33 minute Home Cardio Workout with No Equipment workout. This workout doesn’t contain much jumping (or other loud moves) and offers a variety of body weight workouts. You will be switching moves so quickly that the time will fly by.
I like to take advantage of the free weights in hotel fitness centers. My favorite Total Body Strength Training with Dumbbells workout takes only 27 minutes. The website includes a great list of the strength routine so you don’t even have to play the video. If I’ve really been slacking off, I’ll add jumping jacks in between sets to get some cardio in.
Quick Intense Workout You Can Do Anywhere
My absolute favorite go to workout is Can You HIIT Like a Girl. This 22 minute workout is a challenge. If you have never done a burpee, this workout probably isn’t for you. In a short period of time you feel like you have done more than enough for the day. I do this exercise a lot at home too. Really, who can’t spare about 20 minutes to exercise. The kids also love this one. They do parts of it with me. My 3 year old fondly refers to it as “The Jumpy Video”.
Sometimes You Just Need a Good Stretch
Here is another workout that the kids like to do along with me (see top picture), Refresh, Relax and Restore. Some days all you can bring yourself to do is a light stretching workout. This workout is also great for active vacations. I enjoy doing these stretches after a day of hiking.
